Job #028, Freelancer

I walked for two hours in search of the only Latin Cantina in the city of Gwangju, Korea (which has a population of over 4 million people). I did not find the restaurant. Instead, I found a burger spot. So, I ate a burger after my 15 minute bus ride and two hour walk. I aim to find the place next weekend.

The owner started up the business and is a native of the USA with Costa-Rican roots. The restaurant, www.Tequilaz.com will get a visit from me soon. I would love a chalupa or a burrito or some rice with Latin flavors…mmm!

This week’s job is that of the freelancer! Immediately after I lost my job I went into a really cool state of mind. I needed $100 like pronto and I kept thinking, “in what way can I manifest $100 right now” and low and behold that concentrated effort brought me to these online jobs. And, to date they’ve paid out over $300 to me (I only worked for small jobs here and there, nothing to heavy). And I was paid 50% upfront and 50% at the finish. With your skill set you can do wondrous things teachers (especially if you are writers, artists, graphic designers, video producers, operators/customer relations, etc…). And, especially if you want to put more time and effort..there are long-term jobs, short term jobs, hourly rates or job rates!

Jobs for Teachers

So, I had the MOST success with www.odesk.com. The next best places (I never could really get a lot of work because of the competition, but hey, you ought to still sign up and give it a go…you will be inspired (really) was here: www.elance.com, www.99designs.com (if you design), and of course www.freelancer.com . I am SO thankful of Odesk, really gave me a start I needed, I got paid and learned a lot with this little jobs I did (some simple, some moderately complex…just remember you’ll be competing with folks from other countries too, so they might low-ball the pay, be firm and modest with your requests and you’ll gain long-term employers).

All the best!

Job #027, Teaching Fellow

So, it’s getting hot here in Korea. Not 105 degree hot, but humid, sticky, sauna-hot! Then, it rains, for hours and it cools, momentarily, but the heat returns just as quick as cool appeared from the monsoon. In going to and fro, I wait for the bus and I feel the sweat drip  down my back. Thankfully there’s relief on the bus. This is the Korean summer.

If you live in the South, I’m sure you’d love some of this Korean rain. I hear from friends and family that at least in Texas you all are absent of the rain.

I’m not going out much these days, so this one’s a short blog.

I really do encourage all to do a search for “Paid Teaching Fellows” or “Paid Teaching Fellowships” or “Fellowships for Teachers” etc…in your favorite search engine.

Though the term, Teaching Fellow, often refers to university positions, you may find scholarships/grants afforded to teachers to teach in different locations or to conduct research or a plethora of other ideas. Keep an open mind, and as always, all the best!

Before I begin today let me just say this – I keep hearing and reading pessimists speak and make commentary. So, if you want to think small, you’ll get small you pessimists out there and if you can envision much more, well you’ll thrive during these times. I can only look at the birds flying around collecting their food without complaint – everything is available to them…and if for the birds, then it must be so for humans. I’m just silly enough to think that.

NOW…

It’s the 4th of July and I am, for the second time in my life, in another country and unable to see fireworks. Last year wasn’t too much better – arguing led me to a long drive across the lake in Georgia and I never seemed to get past the monstrous trees to catch a glimpse of the glory in fireworks. But, what am I complaining about, I’m in Asia and this is the birthplace of fireworks – there MUST be some spectacular show or display of fireworks….hmmm (I will search now for it…maybe Chinese New Year will be that time).

Anyway today, Via linkedin, someone approached me in regard to an update on the 2010 teacher layoff map (in response to the job #19 blog post). Because it’d been a while since the publishing of the book: Jobs for Teachers in Transition, I forgot I did indeed have an updated resource for teacher layoffs!

Folks, if you’re really looking to be like the birds (and go where food is plentiful) then teach.gov will supply you with the availability of jobs by state and subject like non-other! Here’s the direct link to the states and the subjects in which they are hiring now: http://teach.gov/become-teacher/job-listings. Just  hit go at the bottom (as of today 8,386 jobs exist!) or put in your city.

**Oh, I must say, Teachers, you are going to have to make yourself standout (that doesn’t mean put your picture on your resume (I made that horrible mistake) but it does mean create something (resume, website, video etc…) that makes you shine!).

All the best!

I just found out I can order Cheetos through www.ezshopkorea.com and have them delivered to me here in Korea without having to pay $100 for shipping (because shipping is a real “you know what I mean”). I am SO happy right now about Cheetos – those corn-things with cheese are not here in Korea like we would like them to be. Instead, Korean cheetos (they are still called cheetos) come flavored in steak, jalapeño and tomato and something else that was just disappointing to my palate.

Enough of my non-sense rambling, you are looking for a job. Here’s one of the more practical places to locate one, the state department of education. Each state has a State Department of Education. This website contains the list of those specific states and their websites. Just find human resources and I guarantee you throughout the nation the state departments are hiring.

All the best to you, I’m going to order my Cheetos :0)

Gosh Korea has me in a time warp and the time really has gone by quite fast! I’ve been here for three months now – and am quickly approaching vacation, a semester break. There are a ton of options to enjoy the time, and I’ve narrowed it down to a reasonable Kayak on the sea, snorkeling to Moon Island and rafting. With clear blue waters waiting for me to jump in, I don’t plan to pass this one up! Islands? Water? Oh I am beyond blessed!

So, with that said, why not bless you beautiful teachers with one of the best resources I have to offer (well I think so). The National Association of Independent Schools looks for teachers all of the time. Enroll (or not) and search for your next teaching position here! Here: www.nais.org

Now, if that doesn’t help you out, go directly to their “Services for Job Seekers” page and on the left-hand column you’ll find “Teacher placement services” which is another term for RECRUITER! Yup, I said it, there are recruiters for teachers! There are all over, so get your resumes in gear folks because there are open positions and if you’re stellar then “hired” is what you’ll be hearing soon!
